Braces are a proven and effective way to straighten teeth, correct bite issues, and support long-term oral health. At Southern Maine Orthodontics, we help patients of all ages understand what to expect during orthodontic treatment and how to care for braces to achieve the best possible results. With the right guidance and daily habits, braces treatment can be a smooth, successful experience.
How Do I Brush and Floss Effectively With Braces?
Brushing and flossing are more important than ever when you have braces. Brackets and wires can trap food and plaque, which increases the risk of cavities, gum inflammation, and white spots if oral hygiene is not consistent.
Patients who do not keep their teeth clean may need more frequent dental cleanings during orthodontic treatment. Adults with a history of gum disease should continue regular care with their general dentist and may also need to see a periodontist during treatment.
We recommend using brushing and flossing techniques specifically designed for braces to help protect enamel, keep gums healthy, and prevent avoidable treatment complications.
What Should I Eat (and Avoid) With Braces?
During the first few days after getting braces, your teeth may feel sore, so softer foods are usually best while you adjust. As treatment continues, you can still enjoy most foods, but you’ll need to protect your braces by avoiding foods that can bend wires, loosen brackets, or break appliances.
Harder foods should be cut into smaller pieces instead of being bitten directly into them. Taking smaller bites and chewing carefully can help reduce discomfort and prevent damage.
Which Foods Should I Avoid With Braces?
To prevent broken brackets and bent wires, it’s best to avoid:
- Chewy foods such as licorice
- Crunchy foods like popcorn and ice
- Sticky foods, including caramels and chewing gum
- Hard foods such as nuts and hard candies
- Foods that require biting into, like whole apples, corn on the cob, and raw carrots
Chewing on non-food items like pens, pencils, or fingernails can also damage braces. When appliances break, it can slow down your progress and may cause braces treatment to take longer.
Is Discomfort Normal After Getting Braces?
Yes. Mild soreness and tooth tenderness are normal after braces are placed and after adjustment visits. Teeth may feel sensitive to biting pressure for about 3 to 5 days, and the lips, cheeks, and tongue may feel irritated for one to two weeks as they toughen and adjust.
Over-the-counter pain relief such as Tylenol can help manage soreness. Orthodontic wax can also be placed over brackets or wires that rub against the cheeks or lips to reduce irritation during the adjustment period.
Why Do My Teeth Feel Loose During Treatment?
This is normal and expected. Teeth must loosen slightly in order to move into healthier positions. Once treatment is complete, the teeth will stabilize in their corrected alignment.
If your teeth feel slightly loose at any point during orthodontic treatment, it is typically part of the normal tooth movement process.
What Should I Do If a Wire or Bracket Comes Loose?
Loose wires or brackets can happen occasionally. If a wire is poking or irritating your mouth, you can gently push it back using the eraser end of a pencil. If irritation continues, place orthodontic wax (or wet cotton) over the area to reduce discomfort.
Please call Southern Maine Orthodontics as soon as possible so we can schedule an appointment to repair the appliance and keep your treatment on track.
Why Is Wearing Rubber Bands So Important?
Rubber bands and other orthodontic appliances play an important role in correcting bite alignment. Teeth and jaws can only move into their proper positions if rubber bands are worn consistently as prescribed.
Not wearing rubber bands as directed or damaging appliances can extend treatment time. Following instructions closely helps ensure efficient progress and the best long-term results.
Can I Play Sports While Wearing Braces?
Yes. If you play sports, especially contact sports, it’s important to let our team know. Wearing a protective mouthguard helps prevent injury and protects braces from damage during athletic activities.
We can recommend or provide a mouthguard option designed to fit comfortably over braces so you can stay active while keeping your smile protected.
