Common Orthodontic Problems

Orthodontic concerns are very common and can affect both children and adults. Teeth and jaws rarely develop in perfect alignment, and even small issues can impact oral health, comfort, and appearance over time. At Southern Maine Orthodontics, Dr. Christopher Murphy evaluates these concerns carefully to recommend treatment that improves both function and aesthetics.

Below are some of the most common orthodontic problems we treat.

Upper Front Teeth Protrusion

This condition occurs when the upper front teeth extend too far forward or the lower jaw sits too far back. Protruding teeth can affect appearance, bite balance, and increase the risk of injury to the front teeth.

Overbite

An overbite happens when the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth too much. In more severe cases, the lower teeth may contact the roof of the mouth, leading to discomfort and tooth wear over time.

Crossbite

A crossbite occurs when one or more upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth instead of outside. This misalignment can affect jaw growth, lead to uneven tooth wear, and cause shifting if left untreated.

Openbite

With an open bite, the upper and lower front teeth do not overlap when biting down. This can interfere with chewing and speech and is often associated with habits such as tongue thrusting.

Crowding

Crowding develops when there is not enough space for teeth to erupt properly. Teeth may overlap or twist, making brushing and flossing difficult. In many cases, expansion can help create space and reduce the need for extractions.

Spacing

Spacing issues occur when there are gaps between teeth, often due to missing teeth or size discrepancies. While sometimes cosmetic, spacing can also affect bite function and tooth stability.

Underbite

An underbite is present when the lower jaw extends forward, causing the lower front teeth to sit in front of the upper teeth. This can impact chewing efficiency, jaw comfort, and facial balance.
